This paper discusses the basic principles of measuring distance in just, rather than equal tempered systems. It looks at 3 pieces, Shri Camel by Terry Riley, Barstow by Harry Partch and Alcestis by myself. The paper attempts to outline some of difficulties/strategies for theorists to approach when analyzing the "distance" between related non-equal tempered scale subsets.
This paper deals with the issues that arose when Takemitsu composed a contemporary work for a traditional Japanese ensemble, the Gagaku orchestra. What makes this piece distinct from other works that attempt to compose for this ensemble is that Takemitsu is composing in a traditional framework. Through historical and score analysis, the paper demonstrates Takemitsu's wide understanding of the syntatical and cultural content of the Gagaku ensemble's musical repertoire and how he uses these traditional practices.
